As with nature, the seasons affect us, humans too. We go through a major shift with the change of seasons. We are introspective in winter; energy goes inside. In the spring, we experience a rebirth – physically, mentally and emotionally – new beginnings!

But…….the depths of winter can be a difficult and a challenging season for many. The lack of light can play havoc with our energy and mood. In nature it’s a time for resting and hibernating, conserving and replenishing energy, introspection, but in modern society this is impossible!

Winter can trigger SAD (seasonal affective disorder) leaving many feeling depressed, despondent, hopeless, and apathetic. Causing sleep problems, lethargy and fatigue, often incapacitating, making it very difficult or impossible to carry out normal routines. This can go on to cause difficulty with concentration and memory, irritability, anxiety, avoidance of social contact, loss of libido, extremes mood changes, agitation and restlessness. Spring brings back the power of light. Light, the relationship of the sun to the earth, is what helps define the seasons. Light has the effect of awakening both the Earth and us humans. Every spring you have a chance to be regenerated again, reborn from the stillness and quietness of winter. You have a chance to open up, just like everything around us. What can this mean for us?

It’s a time to throw off the restraints of winter, waking up, become more alert, with our hearts more open. Spring represents a time for of new beginnings; everything is fresh, clean and striving to grow upward toward the sun. In spring we transition from an introverted state to a state of physical, mental and emotional “blossoming”! With the arrival of spring and its lighter days brings a welcome relief from many of these symptoms. Though this isn’t always the case. For some there’s continued battle and struggle with the above named symptoms. Homeopathy can offer some effective welcome relief. As a homeopath I’d be recommending, you should be on a homeopathic constitutional remedy. This is when I match a specific remedy to your particular set of symptoms and characteristics unique to you. Your constitutional remedy will strengthen and balance your body in a holistic way, incorporating your physical, emotional as well as mental symptoms. This is a unique form of treatment as it triggers your body’s own healing mechanisms, rebalancing the energy in your body. It is very beneficial to have a constitutional remedy because it can be used to treat both chronic and acute complaints, strengthening your body and its’s immune system, preventing future problems. Patients have reported that “I only realised that my anger behind the scenes had subsided, and my anxious body was calmer and I felt a lot better” “Over all I’m feeling more optimistic and interested in life than in longer than I can remember” “I felt my anxiety levels reduced dramatically, it’s really changed my life!” Saying that, here's a selection of homeopathic remedies which I’ve listed, highlighting their specific keynotes that can help differentiate between them that can help safely and gently heal from depression. Ignatia Amara There’s extreme sadness and weeping, a desire for loneliness and avoids meeting people. They get absorbed in grief. Intense hopelessness also prevails, getting offended very easily, may have sudden mood fluctuations. Helpful following disappointed love and grief.

Natrum Mur Constantly dwells on the past unpleasant memories with intense sadness and crying spells. They isolate themselves, avoidance to going out, with reserved personalities and do not wish to share their grief with others. Consolation from others isn’t much appreciated. Prone to get irritated and get offended very easily. Helpful for persons who are suffering since some major disappointments in life, disrupted relationships, after a loss of loved ones etc.

Aurum Met There’s great depression with a feeling of profound hopelessness, loss of love for life and suicidal thoughts, tired of life; thinks that life is a burden, future seems dark with no hope left. There is a strong sense of worthlessness. They also have self-criticizing and self-reproaching behaviour. They get angry very quickly. Helps a person come out of dark, gloomy depression and bring a ray of hope to him.

Sepia There’s a marked indifferent behaviour along with symptoms of depression. The indifference is more towards family members/ friends and towards life. They are also averse to do any work, lacking interest in any activities or entertainment which they were previously fond off. Desire for solitude. Extreme irritability with intense sadness, gloominess is also present. Helpful for depression in women juggling too much, arising after childbirth or around their menopause time or other hormonal times.

Whatever you’re struggling with, do your best to tune into nature and feel yourself becoming aware and alert during the seasons.

Be aware of what’s happening around you and realise that same transition within yourself. Attempt to set the intention to leave some of the old (habits, behaviours, past, etc.) behind. The direction of East is representative of the spring season, with the image of the sun peeking through the clouds. That chink of sunlight reminding us that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
